Your questions answered

Which web hosting plan should I opt for?

To select the best web hosting plan for your project, you will need to start off by identifying what your needs are. Consider the intended purpose for your shared hosting package. Are you simply looking to run a personal blog, publish your CV online, or create a simple showcase page for your activity? This will require significantly lower volumes of resources than most other use cases, so you can keep an eye out for Personal Hosting plans in our Black Friday hosting package deals. Otherwise, are you looking to run a small business on your shared hosting service? Would it be an e-commerce store, and would you want to run multisites on your cloud hosting platform? These options require more storage space, higher traffic, and a wider range of built-in features — so Professional or Performance Hosting plans would be the right options for you in our Black Friday web hosting plan deals. We also offer free Let’s Encrypt SSL certificates with all our web hosting plans, along with a range of CMS tools to install as 1-click modules. Get your project off the ground with our Black Friday shared hosting package sales.

Which dedicated server should I choose?

Selecting the best bare-metal server for your needs will involve defining the nature of your project, and how you intend to use your solution. This means that you will prioritise certain types of resources. The intended purpose for your dedicated server will require certain resource types to be prioritized — so for example, a game development server will need cutting-edge GPU technology, a storage and archiving server will need optimal storage capacity, and a server forming part of a critical infrastructure will need constant uptime and high bandwidth, along with the very highest level of redundancy. If you’re looking to get started with a versatile all-rounder that suits most uses, look out for our Rise server models when you browse our Black Friday dedicated server deals. If a high degree of scalability is what you need, our Scale range will be the one to browse in our Black Friday dedicated server sales. Finally, if you’re looking to minimise your spending but need dedicated resources, look out for our brand-new Eco dedicated server Black Friday deals.

What is the difference between a dedicated server and a VPS?

The fundamental difference between a dedicated server and a VPS lies in the provision of power — i.e., dedicated resources versus guaranteed resources. With dedicated servers, the entire physical machine is allocated to you as its sole user. This means that on top of root access, you can use all the server’s GPU or CPU power, RAM, and storage space, for example.

With a virtual private server, however, the physical server’s resources are partitioned and allocated to multiple users via a virtualization layer. Of course, only the hardware resources are shared — so each VPS host’s data is fully isolated and kept under lock and key.

In simple terms, a virtual private server is like having a flat in an apartment block, whereas a dedicated server is like having an entire house to yourself.

Both solutions have their own suitable uses. A VPS service is perfect for people who do not need the high volume of resources offered by a dedicated server but seek the flexibility of root access. A virtual private server is also highly scalable, so the user can upgrade resources as their project grows, and only pay for what they use. A dedicated server is the next step up for when projects are more fully-fledged and resource intensive.

Now is the perfect time to assess your project’s requirements, so that you’ll be ready to get a Black Friday VPS or a dedicated server in our Black Friday deals.

How do I use Public Cloud solutions?

Getting started with our Public Cloud instances is quick and easy — simply log in to the OVHcloud Control Panel and deploy the resources you need via the services listed in the menu. You are then billed at the end of the month for the resources you use, and payment is taken via the default payment method you set when you create your project. Harness the flexibility of our on-demand Public Cloud solutions with our Public Cloud Black Friday deals, special offers and free trials.

Which should I choose, between a VPS and a web hosting plan?

Fundamentally, the best choice for you will depend on your level of technical knowledge, and the way in which you intend to use your cloud service.

Shared hosting services are managed products. They provide access to the essential elements required to put a website online, and make it work properly. Hardware resources are shared between users on the same server, so they are not guaranteed. Users do not have to worry about hardware maintenance or configuration, and they are not the root user of their solution.

Shared hosting packages also come with a domain name, a free SSL certificate and a range of 1-click CMS (content management system) modules like WordPress, Joomla! and Drupal. In short, their target user is either someone who wants to create an online presence with minimal technical knowledge, or someone who wants to get started without the hassle of technical administration and would make use of a one click website builder. Their target use cases involve smaller-scale websites that aren’t resource intensive — i.e., personal blogs and websites, small businesses and showcase websites.

A VPS (virtual private server) is the next step up from a shared hosting service, as you are the root user. With VPS hosting, you also get allocated guaranteed resources, which you can upgrade as your project grows. A virtual server offers a much greater degree of freedom, flexibility, and scalability. You can also partition your server and choose between Windows and Linux operating systems. However, a higher degree of technical knowledge is required since you are the server administrator. You are free to install your own choice of software, configure your machine as you see fit, and choose your access (root, php.ini, etc.). OVHcloud VPS servers are highly versatile and scalable, which makes them great for a range of uses, from business hosting to gaming servers. Unlike hosting plans, they do not come with additional services like SSL certificates, domain names or CMS tools. Look at your options now, then grab a web hosting plan during our Black Friday deals if you are just looking to get up-and-running online with minimum hassle. If you’d like to go a bit further building your online presence, we recommend ordering a VPS in our Black Friday sales. No matter what your requirements are, our exclusive special offers will include the right option for you.
